Second Day of The Nineveh Lent

St. Dionysius Bar Salibi considers tears to be the sixth form of baptism; and what else is baptism rather than our true birth? Charlotte Bronte, the English Novelist, beautifully puts it; “Crying does not indicate that you are weak. Since birth, it has always been a sign that you are alive.” Christ has in fact called the ones who weep, blessed (Matt. 5:4).

When our culture of toxic masculinity trivializes and sanitizes tears, Scripture confronts this societal vice head-on by devoting an entire verse just for two words “Jesus wept” (John 11:35). More than physical detoxification, tears cleanse our hearts enabling us to see God (Matt. 5:8) and transform our vision of faith as exemplified by the Ninevites. After all, we are called to “walk by faith, not by sight.” (2 Cor. 5:7).
