Third Day of The Nineveh Lent

Simply being born into this world does not entail that our creation as human beings is completed. Our creation is consummated only when we reflect the image and likeness of God. Although God conceived to create us in His image and likeness (Gen 1: 26), He created us only in His image (Gen 1:27) leaving the vocation of likeness for us to achieve (2 Cor 3:18). Therefore unlike other creations, the creation of human beings is a collective effort of God and us.

Our earthly life is our growth into the “full stature of Christ” (Eph. 4:13) because it is Christ who is truly “the image of God” (Col. 1:15). Bearing the cross helps us to transform ourselves – through our death – into fertile and malleable clay which God the Potter can use to create us truly reflecting His will and glory. Thus our creation is an eschatological hope rather than a protological act. As the Scripture reminds us; “When you take away their breath, they die and return to their dust. When you send forth your spirit, they are created.” (Ps. 104:29-30).
