This week we look at the term ‘Mor’ or ‘Mar’ which is frequently used in our everyday worship life as a Syriac Orthodox Christian. As Payne says in the compendious Syriac dictionary, Mor is used “not only in addressing a superior, but as a title of ecclesiastics and saints”. The female equivalent is Mort.
In the Syriac Orthodox tradition, the Peshitta Bible uses the term Moryo in lieu of the Hebrew Tetragrammaton, whenever referring to God. We call our Lord Jesus Christ, Moran Yeshu M’shiho in Syriac. The phrase “Moran Mor” is used when addressing the Patriarch of Antioch, signifying him being in the highest ecclesiastical position of the Holy Church.
